North – Stephen Coltman

Our speaker at the August Natter was Martin Lunn, former Curator of Astronomy at the Yorkshire Museum in York, who entertained us with a fascinating talk and Powerpoint slides about the total eclipse of the Sun in 1927, during whch the path of totality covered an area from North Wales across a large part of Yorkshire to the east coast near Hartlepool. The event was witnessed by tens of thousands of people who arrived by train and motor vehicles, clogging up the roads and rail network in scenes unheard of at the time ! During the meeting Colin Brear was presented with prizes for winning both categories in July’s Pride of Ownership evening.

Numerous members enjoyed both the Dales Run and Burley in Wharfedale Classsic Car Show on Sunday 17th August, which were again blessed with good weather.

Past and future events were discussed at the August Natter. We are pleased to tell you that the MGCC East Yorkshire Christmas Lunch and Run is returning to the Cave Castle Hotel, South Cave.

It has been booked for Sunday 7th December. Please contact Chris Moore for further information. Rooms are available at the hotel, I would suggest checking all booking platforms to get the best prices.

There was a reasonable turnout for the Compass Run. Many thanks to Ray Snowley for all his hard work in organising this event. The last evening social run was well attended, 17 cars, finishing at the Star Inn, Willerby, where we celebrated Chris Moore’s BIG birthday. Many thanks to Chris for

treating us to a wonderful buffet. We are having a quiz at the October Natter provided by Nicky and Dave Rowe.

The August Natter was well supported. Given so many attend the VoY Natter, the Blue Bell Inn car park in Arkendale often resembles a village classic car show. The shiny display of MG cars attracts many admirers and conversations. This show of classic car force must surely spike interest in classic car ownership. A mix of MGCC and classic car events were supported during August, many of which support valuable charities. Charity fund raising would be all the poorer without the support of classic cars clubs.

This month saw, not one but two great Runs; The Compass and The Dales both very much enjoyed by the several SY members that participated. A report can be found elsewhere in this edition of SF. We should however give a special mention and thanks to those who put time and effort into planning the routes, administering entries and generally organising everything to make sure everyone has a fantastic time.

Natter members also discussed final preparations before embarking on an Ireland \Tour, which has

a packed 7 day itinerary and timed to get everyone back just in time for the start of Mgfest. Speaking of which, and although we are now beginning to see the end of the summer days, we still have Mgfest North in our events calendar and we hope to see many members and Mgs there !
